Embracing Local Vernacular Architecture
One of the standout features of RAAS Kangra is its architectural style, which draws heavily from the vernacular Himachali architecture. The design incorporates local materials like stone, slate, and timber, creating a structure that feels both new and timelessly integrated with its natural surroundings. This approach not only pays homage to the traditional architectural styles of the region but also ensures the building harmonizes with the landscape.
Sustainable Design Practices
Sustainability is at the core of RAAS Kangra’s design philosophy. The southern face of the building is equipped with solar panels that power the boilers for the heating system, indoor heated pool, and hot water supply. Additionally, the site uses natural water harvesting systems to capture rainwater, and all sewage is treated on-site through a Bio Root zone system, which is then reused in the landscape.
Innovative Ventilation and Heating Systems
The suites are designed to maximize natural light and ventilation. Large sliding doors with insect screens allow the mountain winds to cool and ventilate the rooms naturally. For the colder months, underfloor radiant heating provides a cozy and comfortable environment. The thoughtful placement of balconies on either side of the suites ensures spectacular views of the mountain range and the valley.
Spatial Planning and Privacy
Each of the 50 suites spans the entire depth of the building and is accessed via private staircases, eliminating the need for corridors and enhancing the guests’ experience by offering unobstructed views. This design consideration not only enhances privacy but also strengthens the connection between the indoor spaces and the natural landscape.
Creating a Rhythmic Structure
The building’s form is a poetic response to its surroundings. It gently curves parallel to the Dhauladhar range, following the contours of the ridge it sits upon. This sinuous form, combined with a colonnade of stacked stone, creates a rhythmic architectural expression that seems to emerge organically from the mountain.
Understated Luxury
Studio Lotus has masterfully balanced luxury and simplicity in RAAS Kangra. The design steers away from a ‘Villa’ or ‘Cottage’ typology, instead opting for a unique architectural experience. This understated luxury is achieved through finely crafted, inexpensive local materials, creating a space that feels luxurious without being ostentatious.
Restoration and Reforestation
As part of a larger sustainability initiative, the entire site is being reforested with native trees and plants. This effort aims to create a rich forest that will attract local fauna, enhancing the biodiversity of the area. This ecological restoration underscores the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Conclusion
RAAS Kangra is a testament to the power of thoughtful, context-sensitive design. By embracing local architectural traditions and integrating sustainable practices, Studio Lotus has created a boutique hotel that offers a luxurious yet grounded experience. It is a space where modern comforts meet natural beauty, offering guests a tranquil retreat that is both timeless and contemporary.
